Epilogue 2005

  • Beautiful photos by Atak (c) René Damkot www.damkot.com
  • By the folkclub (far less professional ;)

The young La Machine, from mid-France, mixes French dance music with influences from well beyond Europe into an original groovy sound. Their cd presentations at the populair St. Chartier festival this summer was the revelation of the festival. La Machine brings ball, but also listening music and their singer also uses other languages. Their hurdy-gurdy player: Gregory Jolivet recently joined the legendary English Blozabella

EmBRUN is well known in Belgium for their steaming bal folk performances. They play a cross-over of European styles with lots of swing and energy. Since the members are well respected dancers themselves, they know how to please a dancing crowd. Standing still is not an option, though their virtuosity and clever arrangements, are a pleasure to listen to as well.

The sympathetic Naragonia duo play beautiful subtile music that will move you. They are masters at an impressive amount of instruments (eg Irish uillean pipes). Their cd, with La Machine's hurdy-gurdy player, is just finished.

This year the New Folk night will be in-door at the Atak pop center in between the railwaystation and the marketplace (just 2 min walking). From 21:00 a dansworkhop for starters with live music by Naragonia takes place in the Atak café. The concerts start at 22:00 with EmBRUN, followed by La Machine, Naragonia and bal folk session. Non-dancers have a great view from the balcony and you can smoke in the café. There will be an instrument checkroom for sessionplayers. The venue will close at about 4:00 and busses from the station run each half hour until 4:30 to the campus where you can spend the night (make a reservations here).

The New Folk night is part of the annual Enschede Muziek Festival. On Friday Enschede has many free concerts, starting with a lunch-concert at the music conservatory. That night the city theater houses a folky-festival with many big names (fado, gipsy, russian, etc).

    2004 festival epilogue

The outdoor bal folk festival last september was a huge succes, see the festival outdoor photos HERE. The big number of (young) visitors dancing on folk music amazed everyone including the local press which declared the New Folk day to be the festival-week's outdoor highlight: HERE (in Dutch with big picture of the workshop). All involved parties where delighted with the turnout and the excellent atmosphere. The afterparty in the church lasted until 6:00 and will not easily be forgotten by the 100 invitee. Naturally we are going to organise more bal folk events. Keep a watch on this site, or join the mailinglist list (low-traffic)

    Bal Folk?

The French 'bal folk' has become very populair in Belgium and is also growing rapidly in The Netherlands and Germany (also known as folkbal, balfolk or spansen). The most successful is the Ambrozijn accordeon player: Wim Claeys with his Boombal projekt. Started in Gent, the Boombal mania is now spread all over Flanders and crossing the border.

In Gent, a Boombal night will draw a 500 big audience of all ages but mainly students. Simple but fun dances as scottish, gigue, circle circassian, bourree, an-dro, walz, mazurka, etc, on live performed music, mainly Flemish/Dutch/France folk inspired. Very interesting (fusion folk) music and excellent atmosphere. See for instance pictures of Boombal at Gent, the recent Folkbal festival at Eindhoven, or the huge picture galary of DJ Jåk.

Some bands with balfolk repertoire: Balbrozijn (B), Embrun (B), Follia! (B), Fluxus (B), AedO (B), Madingma (B), Twalseree (B), 'k Voel me Belg (B), Lirio (NL), Madlot (NL), Blowzabella (UK), Minuit Guibolles (F), An Erminig (D), Einstürzende Heuschober (D), Fromage Diatonique (D) La Marmotte (D) La Chanterelle (D) ..

    Some big folkfestivals with balfolk:
